Value Stream Mapping – Part of Our Lean TQM Toolbox Series

The problem: You need to increase the efficiency of a process, or you need to reduce the time taken, waste incurred, or volume of inventory in a supply chain. Perhaps you have a misalignment between flow of information and processes. A Value Stream Map allows you to see a top-down overview of your business processes. Then, you can analyse the process or workflow, identifying wastes and inefficiencies.

Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is one of the most powerful tools in the TQM Toolbox, as it provides a structured visualisation of the key steps and corresponding data needed to understand and intelligently make improvements that optimise the entire process. It reveals those steps or activities that do not add any value to the product, service or customer satisfaction.

The mapping activity can be immensely helpful in providing leaders, stakeholders and team members with a unified view that enables them to break out of their functional silos and gain a wider understanding of the overall process and their respective roles and contributions to the finished product.

Simple to use and versatile, Value Stream Mapping generates accurate and relevant insights for all levels of decision makers.

We have partnered with our sister organisation, the Australian Supply Chain and Logistics (ASCAL) Institute to bring you another tool in our Lean-TQM Toolbox Series. Click the link for a simple step-by-step process brief.
